Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Ratios, switching, allergies, safety and shipping: answered plainly.

Is 80/10/10 complete and balanced?

The prey-model blends are built to whole-animal ratios rather than to an AAFCO nutrient profile, which is why rotation across proteins matters: it broadens the nutrient base. AAFCO nutrient profiles are built around highly refined, commercially processed kibble, which is less bioavailable than raw food. If you want a single fortified formula with added vitamins and minerals, Tex’s Beef Prey Model Plus is the one to look at. All Texas Tripe blends are laboratory-tested for nutritional content. When in doubt, review your dog’s diet with your vet.

How do I switch my dog from kibble?

Go gradually over about nine days: start at roughly ¼ raw to ¾ current food and shift the ratio by ¼ every few days. Some owners prefer separate meals rather than mixing. Expect smaller, firmer stools. If stools go loose, slow down; if they go chalky and hard, the blend may be high in bone. Add tripe or move to a lower-bone blend.

Which blend should a first-timer buy?

Beginner’s Choice or Beef Blend. Both are beef-forward, single-protein-dominant, and easy on a new digestive system. Add Green Tripe as a topper if your dog needs convincing. Very few dogs turn it down.

Do you have blends for puppies and seniors?

Yes. Beginner’s Choice is formulated at 75/15/10 with extra bone for growing puppies, plus sardine for omega-3s. Beef Blend and All Star Bully Blend also have Ca:P ratios appropriate for puppies. Senior Pro Blend adds chicken feet as a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin to support joints. Shepherd’s Blend is a high-fat option for working dogs or a dog that needs to put weight back on.

What about protein allergies?

Use the protein filter on the shop page. Duck / Rabbit Blend and Pork are novel-protein options for dogs that react to beef or chicken. Note the collagen calcium mix used in some recipes is hydrolyzed from salmon bone. It is Type 2 collagen only, without the Type 1 salmon protein most commonly implicated in fish reactions.

Is raw pet food safe to have in my kitchen?

Raw meat can carry Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli, and no raw meat can be sold as pathogen-free. Texas Tripe operates a HACCP program, sources from USDA-certified suppliers with letters of safety guarantee and uses high-pressure processing to reduce pathogens. Your part is the same discipline you’d use with raw chicken. See the handling guide.

How does shipping work?

Flat $25 per order, anywhere in the western 7 states, however much you buy. We ship frozen: orders leave our freezer packed for transit and are meant to arrive frozen or still firm with ice crystals, either of which is fine to put straight back in the freezer.

Can I subscribe instead of reordering?

Yes. Subscribe & Save takes 5% off the product on every repeat delivery, on top of any box saving. Shipping stays at the $25 flat rate. Skip, pause or cancel online whenever you like.

What are the 24 and 40 lb boxes?

They are build-your-own cases. The 24 lb L Box takes 2 lb chubs only and takes $5 off automatically. The 40 lb XL Box takes both 2 lb and 5 lb chubs and takes $10 off automatically. No code needed either way. In the 40 lb box, 5 lb chubs need to come in even numbers to land exactly on 40.

Stack a subscription on top for a further 5%.

What are the specks of discoloration in some blends?

Two harmless things. USDA on-site inspectors require meat destined for pet food to be marked so it cannot re-enter the human food chain.

Some ingredients arrive as stackable frozen “nude blocks” on pallets. USDA rules require a food-grade coloring made from organic materials on the top layer of each pallet to show the contents are bound for a pet food manufacturer. Every pet food manufacturer must do this. Texas Tripe processes that top layer separately, so the coloring is rarely visible, but occasionally a little makes it through. It is non-toxic and completely safe for your dog.
